John Prine, a little known musician/singer/songwriter to most people has a song entitled ‘In Spite Of Ourselves.’ The song speaks of no matter what, ‘we’ll wind up sittin on a rainbow’. So goes the last 9 days for the Blue Devils. After it looked as if the rival Heels would beat Duke with a 10 point lead and just over 2 minutes to go, the rain slowed, the skies opened, and the rainbow appeared in the form of an arching 3 pointer from Austin Rivers.
Then came Maryland, a team who admit it or not has become one of the more anticipated games of the year for Duke, ” I’ll give you a moment to promptly thank Jay Williams” …… Ok, so after Austins coming out party at the Dean E. Smith Center we were expecting him, Seth or Mason to lead us to a win against the Terrapins. But enter Miles Plumlee, Miles steps up with 13 points and an impressive 22 rebounds “Shades of Zoubeks” coming out party against Maryland.
That brings us to NC State. The Wolf Pack showed up with all cylinders firing, Duke barely had a heartbeat, a pulse was hard to find, the Pack had Duke by the throat and only needed to deliver the death blow. A 20 point lead seemed insurmountable as Duke lay lifeless in State’s wake. But, Seth Curry after re-injuring his ankle goes to the bench, he thought he might not be able to re-enter the contest, Jose Fonseca re-taped Seth’s ankle “Seth, I’m not sure I can go back out, Jose, you have to. “Another moment to Thank Jose…..Ok, Seth comes back out to have a career game with 26 points He and Austin Rivers hit huge three pointers late to finally turn the game back to Dukes favor and ultimately a win. So again, “In Spite Of Ourselves” Duke remains tied atop the ACC.
It remains to be seen if Duke can continue to win in this manner, while the odds say no, they seem to find a way “In Spite Of Ourselves”
